The Roosevelts and the
Royals is based on interviews with five Roosevelt grandchildren
and on previously unpublished letters of Franklin
and Eleanor
Roosevelt, King George
VI, Queen
Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of
Windsor, and the Duke of Kent found in the FDR
Library and the Royal
Archives at Windsor Castle. The letters are
published here by the gracious permission of Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II. The book was supported by The Queen
Mother, who offered comments about the Roosevelts in the
last months of her life.
The author
represented the Roosevelt family and the FDR Library in
negotiations with the Queen Mother's private secretary,
Sir Alastair Aird, to choose comments from the Queen Mother
for a plaque to commemorate the 1939 visit of the king and
queen to Hyde Park. This plaque, with The Queen Mother’s
thoughts about the Roosevelts and the royal visit, is now
placed at Roosevelt’s Top Cottage in remembrance of
the famous hot dog picnic, hosted by the Roosevelts for
the king and queen.
